It's been a while since the last post, mine or yours... Well, I am back from a long needed vacation. In the meanwhile we had four new articles waiting from guys from Snagsta and a new company in our index - Adflyer. You will find UK startup Adflyer in our company index together with a Czech startup Mloovi.
Well, I have a lot of things planned out for the last quarter of 2008. I have already initiated a survey with all the CEO's and Founders (and a few others) registered at EuropeanStartups about what they think of outsourcing development to companies, contractors, and freelancers. The point is not to discuss what they think about outsourcing in terms of looking cheep work force in India or Eastern Europe, but what are their stands on having their products or modules developed by outsiders. I have about 10 responses so far (out of 100). Not that many, but it's understandable due to my lack of communication with them and lack of effort on the EuropeanStartups as well. I wasn't a good boy as our counterparts at UK TechCrunch ;)! Just kidding! It's very apprising to see guest author's postings at UK TechCrunch.
So, what now? Well, firstly we have many conferences coming up in Europe in the Autumn season. One of them in Robin Wauters's Plugg conference in Belgium which will be advertised here at the site. Any of you throwing any conferences or attending any, please let us know of any details you'd like to share. Please do that using the existing functionality for registered EuropeanStartups users.
Next, we will try to patch up some bugs we have at the site and make some things automatic so certain delays will be avoided.
As for the future development, we are planning to release a few new modules:
1. Interview's section
2. Expanded Company management section
3. Networking section for registered users
4. Forum for techies
Basically, our goal is to better adjust the current site in order to make it really useful for startups to share ideas, look for feedback and testers, promote products, look for professionals, seek investments, offer investments, promote, promote, and ... have I said "promote" yet?
I'd also like to officially inform everyone of a great web development team that I have gathered behind me over this summer that is now formally offering services in web development, web design, and IT and marketing consulting. The strength of the team lays in the vast experience exposed for companies such as Austrian National Television ORF, Austrian Chamber of Commerce WKO, largest job search site in the world Monster.com, biggest European online sporstbook betting provider BWIN, and most successful digital media agency in the world - Starcom MediaVest! Therefore, all of you needing a strong team to help you build most competitive web applications out there, feel free to reach me directly.
Finally, in order to push you promote yourself or your startup further more at EuropeanStartups, I have intentionally left out URLs in this article, so you can add them latter in your comments. Well, the usual practice so far is that no one cares, or only a few does, but I will stay hard-headed on this topic ;)
Oh, I almost forgot! Many thanks for all who added your CV's to our database. We are working closely with Iperium Consulting, our Premium sponsor, leader in recruitment for Web 2.0 market in Europe. They will resume their usual activity mid of next week, and you may expect to be contacted soon after that.
As success of a startup is dependent upon openness of its platform, here at EuropeanStartups we have decided to give an example and open up one more functionality for all the registered EuropeanStartups users - "Hey CEO, what's on your mind?"!
Now, once you go to the Hey CEO, what's on your mind? page, you will get a screen such as this one with your name on it:
Feel free to use this feature for any European startups related topics, such as startup news, announcements, technology, future plans, chat with other members, etc... Only one feature remains, and that is - only the CEO's and highly ranked company employees will be having their company logo next to their posts. Please email us at EuropeanStartups [at] gmail [dot] com in case we do not have your logo. Logo size should be 100x50 pixels.
Once again we have restructured the Company Index page in order to make it more competitive, more informative, and more useful to all of us.
This time, next to the company index tag cloud where companies are showed by the EuropeanStartups Ranking ( Votes/Month + Number of Blog Posts ), we have added listings of recently added companies and recently updated companies in order to keep you up to date with the latest companies in Europe and with the latest developments in already listed companies.
Last but not least, we have added an option where every registered user can suggest a new company by simply filling in a form with company's basic details. Here at EuropeanStartups we hope that the latest updates will be of most benefit to everyone visiting EuropeanStartups.
Dear EuropeanStartups readers,
I'd like to invite you all to give us a valuable public feedback about EuropeanStartups, meaning - all your comments (feedback) to this post will be displayed for everyone to see and we will keep you informed about what we think about it and what we will do about it.
Help us improve in order to serve you better!
Should I assume that no comments would mean that we do a perfect job? Yeah right! ;) We gave you a lot, it's time that you give something back - and that, again, only to serve you better!
I have just added a few more companies to the Company Index page, all of which are clients of Iperium Consulting, EuropeanStartups main sponsor:
WooMe, based in London, UK.

WooMe's in-browser video and voice capability delivers a live interactive experience where users play for fun, to hook up, or just meet new people around shared interests. There are no tedious profiles, no software to download, and best of all it's free.
Nimbuzz, based in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

But Yuuguu’s vision stretches far beyond the world of work. Yuuguu’s unique, easy to install features can give anybody the freedom to be together, whether at work or play, even when they’re not.
Palringo

Palringo is a novel Instant Messaging program that runs on a variety of phones and PCs. Palringo allows you to instantly exchange text, photos and vocal IMs with individuals or groups.
In the next couple of days, we will release the update to the Control Center where users can update their company profiles. Currently registered users for each company can be seen at companies profile pages. If you are not listed or your company is not listed, please let us know at EuropeanStartups [at] gmail [dot] com. Further more, each registered user can have his or her own profile page. All you need to do is to login and go to your Control Center, where you will see how to initialize your profile. In the near future all mentions of your name throughout the site will link to your profile page, while all mentions of your company will link to your company's profile page.

Dear users, friends, and colleagues,
A moment when we overpassed capacity of our servers has finally came. Unfortunately, we could not do anything about that immediately, and therefore you have experienced very long server response times over the past two weeks mostly resulting with an error message "Rails application could not start". However, we have reacted in time, and starting today afternoon we will initiate migration to new servers. We hope that migration will run smoothly and that we will be back and running in full capacity on Monday morning.
Thank you for your time and business,
Ivan Trajkovic
Founder & CEO, EuropeanStartups
If you are a job seeker in the European Web startup industry and you haven't found any matching job opportunities or there aren't any opportunities posted yet, feel free to upload your CV at the already existing feature EuropeanStartups Curriculum Vitae. Once the amount of CV's reaches the critical mass, I will release a EuropeanStartups CV search feature.
Just moments ago I have introduced a new functionality to EuropeanStartups.com - "My Control Center", a site which gives you a blog writing interface. Just log in to your account and you will notice "My Control Center" link in the Header of the page.
Once you open your control center you will see a link "Write a new post" and "List my Blog posts", which I'd say are self explanatory. Once you write a post, it will be "proposed" for publishing. A proposed post will be approved or not approved within 24 hours. If it is not approved you will receive an explanatory message with suggestions how to change that decision. Until the post is approved you are able to edit it or delete it. Once it is approved, it will stay as such permanently.
What should the posts be about? As EuropeanStartups is a weblog dedicated to spread a word about European Web startups and to cover topics that are in any way related to European technology startups: emerging technologies, investors, successful businesses, people who make the difference, etc, please try to keep the focus in that area. Feel free to advertise your own business in an informative and educational manner. If you'd like to give an opinion about someone else's product and the post about that product already exist, write a comment to that post.
If you have any suggestions or concerns just send me an email to europeanstartups [at] gmail [dot] com, and I will be glad to response as soon as humanly possible.
I'd like to congratulate Alex Moore, MD at Snagsta, for the first post "Clearing the clutter from your desktop" via the new system!

Note: this is not an official BWIN.COM announcement.
I am happy to announce, after months of development, a new version of BWIN's L!VE Bet Slip, currently available at BWIN Mexico label as of 11:00AM GMT +1!
As a Software Engineer at BWIN.COM and a Responsible developer of this project, I am not at freedom to discuss any details of it's technology and business background, other that what is obvious - L!VE Bet Slip has a great user friendly Flash interface which relies on WebService backend based on Microsoft .NET technologies. A major update from the previous version is the "Odds Acceptance" functionality, which allows users to automatically accept higher or any odds changes, while odds changes are clearly visible at the Bet Slip itself. As well, the Update button (next to the Place Bet button) allows user to update the Bet Slip with one click and enable it to be placeable. As this is the Live betting functionality, the speed of user interaction with the Bet Slip is of the upmost importance.

“Using natural language processing, machine learning and other methods, Calais categorizes and links your document with entities (people, places, organizations, etc.), facts (person ‘x’ works for company ‘y’), and events (person ‘z’ was appointed chairman of company ‘y’ on date ‘x’).”
Calais is a product of Reuters' acquisition last year of tagging platform vendor ClearForest Ltd, and many people question why they took a half-million high-end enterprise software and made it free! AOL Search and AltaVista veteran Gerry Campbell who moved to Reuters about a year and a half ago as president of Reuters Search and Content Technologies group, explains to Jennifer Zaino of SemanticWeb.com: "we made what used to be a half-million or quarter-million dollar, high-end deployment of enterprise software available for free, with the idea that the more folks use it the better Reuters can associate that content back in, so our customers can see more of what is going on in the world."
What Calais does for developers is that when called via a SAOP or a REST-based service with plain text or XML documents, it sends a response of the text analysis in RDF format. Currently, the response is tuned towards business-related people and events, and it supports "only" English language.
The next step for EuropeanStartups.com is to find a way to best implement Calais into its existing platform. That will be the third step of our development process towards the Semantic Web integration. You can follow the progress of the EuropeanStartups Semantic Web Project here.
First implementation will consist of auto-generated RDF (Resource Description Framework) information/meta-data for each new post. This would be the first step of EuropeanStartups.com entering into the Semantic Web environment. Basically the logic is very simple, however, implementation is not - the entire new post will be "scanned" for "keywords". Those keywords are in the matter of fact "statements of triples", consisting of a subject, a predicate, and an object. You will probably notice that my sentences will be shorter and more precise in the first stage, until the RDF generator evolves.
As the RDF generator kicks off, I will use the existing logic to enrich each new article and comment from any registered user. Each "keyword" will access the Semantic Web in the search for the meaningful knowledge, and will either link to the matches or provide a list of resources in the footnote. This way EuropeanStartups.com will not only provide Semantic content, but will also apply it and join it fully.
More about this topic in the posts to come. I will keep you updated of the progress.
In order to serve the purpose of EuropeanStartups.com as the promoter of European startups and the startup awareness, together with educational note and a focus on valuable and targeted discussion, I am announcing a new EuropeanStartups.com functionality - Debates. EuropeanStartups.com Debates has a purpose to initiate meaningful debates about today's most important topics in the Web business world. Each registered user can propose new Debate topics and vote for the suggested ones. A user can only vote once for each of the suggested topics. At this stage, we are only collecting the proposals and measuring the popularity of the topics. When we decide that one topic has reached the expected interest, we will move forward to the new phase where EuropeanStartups.com registered users can actually debate about the selected topic. When the time comes, I will go more into details about the Debate itself.
Link: EuropeanStartups.com Debates!
Ivan Trajkovic
CEO, EuropeanStartups.com
Dear readers,
Starting now (December 17th, 2007 - 2:45AM GMT +1), voting is enabled again. ONLY Registered Users are allowed to vote. I have decided to allow 2 votes per 24 hours for Registered Users, with a hope that some startups will be able to catch up.
There were suggestions that I should reset the votes, however I decided not to do so for a simple reason. Some startups have invested a really large effort to get votes, and we should all respect that. Therefore, what may happen at the end is that a few top voted startups all receive shared promotion throughout the site.
In addition, I want to add that the winning comment must be an answer to my comment posted on December 3, 2007.
Best wishes to you all,
Ivan Trajkovic
CEO EuropeanStartups.com
P.S. For those who haven't heard that the voting was paused, please read the following announcement from December 16, 2007 - 14:00 GMT +1:
Due to increasing occurrence of faked IP addresses, I am forced to announce that the voting will only be allowed for registered users starting Monday December 17th, 2007. Users who registered by December 17th, 2007 and have suspicious email addresses will receive an email which will be used to verify their email address before they are allowed to vote.
While a Guest visitor can vote only once per day, Registered User can vote once more when Logged In!
Your activity as a Registered User throughout the site builds up toward your EuropeanStartup Expert Status!
There are 3 statuses for Registered EuropeanStartup Users: Startup, Experienced, and Expert user.
Many ideas are born and developed with an input from others. As Loic Le Meur describes in the ten rules for startup success: "Share your idea. The more you share, the more you get advice and the more you learn. Meet and talk to your competitors."
EuropeanStartup Community provides you with this environment.
Register here!
This is just a new Alpha version with a few new functionalities and a new design.
I'd like to invite all users to take a part in expanding the KnowledgeCenter database with relevant topics. I believe that all of you are aware in which direction I am going with KnowledgeCenter, and that no further information is needed :).

Dear readers,
I have a short but a significant announcement - Mike Butcher from TechCrunch UK wrote a post today about EuropeanStartups.
You can read the entire article @ TechCrunch UK
"TechCrunch UK & Ireland is a blog covering Web 2.0 and Mobile start-ups. TechCrunch UK is part of the TechCrunch Network, which includes country-specific blogs for France and Japan. (source: TechCrunch UK)".
I doubt there is many Web 2.0 aware consumers who haven't heard about TechCrunch, a leader in Web and Technology news around the World which attracts attention of more than 1.5 million unique visits per month.
I am glad to announce that the Alpha version of EuropeanStartups' KnowledgeCenter has been launched just moments ago.
My hope is that the KnowledgeCenter will be used not only by ones who need it professionally or educationally and ones who want to share the knowledge, but also by those who want to learn more about this field of business.
Please feel free to submit related articles, essays, blogs, and other links. At this stage we are focusing only to growth of KnowledgeCenter database. Much more functionalities will be implemented in the upcoming days and weeks.
We are always open to any suggestions. You can find our contact information here.
- We are officially looking for investors
- Conference Index is now separated from Company Index
- We are developing EuropeanStartups Knowledge Center, and hope to have it deployed by November 1st, 2007. I will announce more information about the Knowledge Center when the time is right.
- We are constantly having problems with hosting provider as you have probably noticed. We are looking for a new one.
- EuropeanStartups has reached an average of 70 unique visitors per day.
- Google-ing "European startups" puts us at the 4th spot (80 spots jump from five days ago!)

Dear readers,
due to my participation at BarCamp Vienna today, please expect more news in the afternoon. If you will be participating as well, you will notice me handing over business cards and company/product surveys. Do not hesitate to approach me! :)
Until then, yours truly,
Ivan Trajkovic

Our mission is not only to provide coverage about European startups that have showed some or a lot of success, but also to report about the ones that have a potential to break into European startup scene.

I would like to discuss with the community the issue of how start-ups should operate. Whether it is more reasonable to be virtual company with employees working from home. Or is it still more efficient to get together in one physical office every day.

I'd like to get the community's thoughts on when to start looking for formal advisers? Is it even necessary? If so, what are some of the strategies that can help find great advisers.

Both my co-founder and I are not techies. We are developing a pretty complex web app and we decided to have an internal team of 2 developers to start with. Now the costs of in-house London based developers is a bottleneck for our growth and we're looking abroad to find cheap and talented people to w ... [read more]
