It's been more than a month since NewsCred Alpha release and their mention at TechCrunch, which attracted quite a large debate about news credibility. Now when passion has settled up a bit, it's time to recap what NewsCred brings us and what other have thought about it.
First of all, I'd like to congratulate Shafqat (NewsCred Founder) on the successful Alpha release, and on being voted for the May's EuropeanStartup of the month. Second of all, I must say that I am deeply disgusted by people's bias and negative comments about NewsCred without even a visit to the site.
I cannot but agree with Jason Kincaid of TechCrunch when talking about NewsCred. Just consider the following scenario (it is just an example, not my personal political opinion): If NewsCred gets more registered users from US than from EU, would that mean the credible general mass opinion is that EU actually wants more than anything to have the US rocket shield installed all over Europe? It's just ridiculous! Maybe a good solution would be to add a filter that can single out credible stories by users' location. That way, we can compare credible stories on a certain topic by US and by EU users' opinion, and still leave something for the brain to decide. If you get everything served on a plate, you stop using your brain and you let being manipulated by story creators. But let's not go into politics now...
However, I do not entirely agree with Jason! It seams that everyone have forgotten that NewsCred registered users can personally filter the news by their own opinion, meaning that you don't have to read news by "mass opinion". You can select the sources and the authors which you consider credible, and keep it at that. That makes it the best personal news aggregator out there! Still, it's interesting to see at this early stage what people generally think about all the news sources, before it gets "spoiled" by masses like what happened to Digg where you have a strong lobby tailoring most popular news.
