It is very rare these days to see a startup running on Microsoft technologies. One of these is Workology, a startup from UK which recently completed a seed round of $500.000 with angel investors who have a track-record of backing successful online startups. Workology is presented as one place for people to create unique work opportunities to suit their different working stiles - a place that would help people control their work online efficiently.
It also intriguing to see that professionals with sound backgrounds are moving into the Web 2.0 business, as it is the case with Workology founders Sam Gyimah (Goldman Sachs) and Anuj Goyal (BBC). In earlier conversation with Sam, he provided me with a list of features and benefits that Workology provides to the user. And that's where this crucial professional experience comes to the stage - practical straight to the point approach which targets the problem and strives for solution. Therefore I will now provide you with Sam's "problem - solution" list: Problem No 1. I want to work differently – where can I find the right work opportunities? Workology is the first place to aggregate all those non-9-5 professional opportunities that are otherwise hard to find [eg. three days a week business development for a start-up whilst I write my own business plan] Problem No 2. How best can I showcase my skills and portfolio in an easy, professional way that everyone can see? Workology provides its members with their own easy-to-complete, professional MiniSite, which has unlimited storage space, is publicly accessible, and is published and optimised on the WWW. Problem No3. Where can I find solutions to my very individual work challenges? Workology brings together likeminded members on a collaborative platform to share their experiences and expertise. Problem No4. I’ve applied for jobs, and promoted myself, but still need more opportunities more regularly to sustain my way of working – how can I do this? Workology allows members to expand their referral networks by connecting with other members who have contributed to the community Problem No5. I’ve got to juggle lots of different balls in creating my own way of working – isn’t there an easier way to manage this? Workology provides each member with one place, their Workspace, to manage their work opportunities, contacts, MiniSite and eventually work support apps – everything they need to create and sustain their own way of working. Maybe you wonder "OK, this reminds me of LinkedIn and Xing" and yes you are right. However, not entirely! I'm going to try to explain the facts and hopefully provide you with the reasoning of why Workology is the next big thing. LinkedIn... I currently have 500+ connections... more than a half are recruiters! Any use of them? NO! Xing... a bit better situation I must say. Actually, very beneficial! Workology - a mix of both, the best of two worlds! Just try registering and you will see with which ease you are taken through the process of introducing yourself. The entire process of creating your profile is so smooth that it makes you complete it. Everything is well organized, from groups, to members and discussions. There are four main modules - My Workspace, Knowledge Market, Groups, and Members Directory, each very well organized with simplicity that exactly justifies its purpose. Another great feature is My Mini Site. "Your Mini Site is the principal way to promote your expertise on Workology. It is independently searchable on the web. You can also create as many as you need (eg. accountant by day; flute teacher by night). This feature is open to all members of the site, individuals and organizations." Each functionality has a "tip box" right next to it explaining its functionality to the core. The only thing that makes me worry about the success of Workology is if it will attract job providers next to the job seekers. That is something not many websites are able to accomplish. When I double-think about it, I can't actually think of any other than the ones that exploit the work power such as oDesk. I'd really like to see a place that will change this and bring highly experienced professionals and knowledgeable job providers together. I had to say "knowledgeable" job providers since another obstacle to a good contract is a client which does not know the technical aspect of the solution while pretending to know more than the one he or she tries to hire. I might be wrong if we talk in general since I am of the IT background, but still I am pretty sure it applies in general. I am also hoping that the Q & A (discussion) section will bring some high quality discussions. It's very important that beta user base is of high professional quality in their industry. That will initiate high quality discussions and, even more important, solutions! Again, I have LinkedIn in mind where many users are asking such ridiculous questions which sometimes even overwhelm the aspects of stupidity! Therefore, again, very important - they must initiate high quality discussions because they will determine the future content quality. At the end I'd like to mention and even thank Sam and Anuj for allowing FREE postings of Job Opportunities! Definitely something that will bring them a lot of points! I wish you best of luck and a good momentum! Sam thank you for registering at EuropeanStartups and I hope that you and/or your marketing team will maximally "abuse" the startup marketing capabilities provided here! |
