| by Anuj Goyal, Creative Director @ Workology |
'So what do you do...?' It's a question that in some situations can be tricky to answer if you haven't got a swanky corporate title underscored by a multinational brand. 'Erm... I'm a freelancer/ working mum/ job-juggler/portfolio careerist/ consultant/ oh, a bit of this, a bit of that...' You notice an amused eyebrow raised in an 'I've got your number, mate' sort of way, and you rage at the injustice of a world that likes to label.
So what do you do then? Unlike the Director of Corporate Communications at Unilever, you can't squeeze your working identity into a neat HR package with a tidy pension and company Mondeo. You have multiple work identities, you are pursuing a passion, or you are blazing your own trail. Simply put, you are working your own way. But how do say this and sound credible? Given that Workology is a platform to help people control the way they work, we did have a shot at this with 'non-9-5', but were duly shot down on the mobile micro-blogging site, Twitter, by one of the many followers of popular US blogger, eMom. Too parochial maybe? Workology member, Mike Rogers, coined the term 'Workologist' in a post in our Knowledge Market. We like the idea of our members finally getting their '-ology' for the years they've spent earning their expertise! We wonder what Maureen Lipman would say! More importantly, what do you think? We have started a discussion in Workology's Knowledge Market called ‘You’ve got an '-ology!'. Please let us know your thoughts. Best wishes, Anuj and Sam |
